UNEP/GRID-Warsaw Centre, established in 1991, is a specialized UN-affiliated agency, part of the GRID (Global Resource Information Database) network, established in the framework of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) with the mission to collect, process, and disseminate environmental information in Poland and the Eastern Europe, and promote the use of GIS and ICT applications for environmental management. Areas of expertise and activity include environmental data processing, environmental reporting, thematic cartography and environmental mapping, database development and maintenance, spatial data analyses, development of webGIS applications, use of remote sensing tools and techniques, as well as capacity building for the broad use of spatial information, GIS and ICT applications in environmental management. -Warsaw promotes the implementation of the INSPIRE Directive, is
the EIONET National Reference Centre for Land Cover, acts as a Centre of Excellence in Poland, and collaborates with the European Environment Agency (EEA).


UNEP/GRID-Warsaw served as a lead data centre for  the Carpathians Environment Outlook (KEO) responsible for harmonization, integration and dissemination of data sets provided for KEO analytic purposes; was involved in UN FAO SARD-M (Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development in Mountain Regions) Policy Assessment for the Carpathians in 2007.UNEP/GRID-Warsawclosely cooperates with the UNEP Vienna - Interim Secretariat of the Carpathian Convention and the Ministry of the Environment of Poland, and is currently the Lead Partner of the project “Carpathians Unite – mechanism of consultation and cooperation for the implementation of the Carpathian Convention”, supported by the Swiss-Polish Cooperation Programme, implemented between 2012 and 2015 in the Polish part of the Carpathians, works include the development of the information system on the Polish part of the Carpathians.


Role in BioREGIO Carpathians project

UNEP/GRID-Warsaw contributes to tasks under WP2, WP3 and WP5 and is involved in communication activities, collection and analysis of data on threatened species and habitats in the Carpathians for the elaboration of the draft Red Lists of Species and Habitats, development of the list of invasive alien species, data collection and analysis concerning ecological continuity and connectivity issues in the Carpathians, and the establishment of the Carpathian Joint Biodiversity Information System (CJBIS).
